The Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board has announced the death of one individual from a suspected cholera case within the state.
This information was revealed by the Board’s chairman during a press briefing on Monday, following the launch of the 2024 MNCH Week.
According to Dr. Mohammed, 50 suspected cholera cases have been identified in Bauchi State across three Local Government Areas since January.
He noted that the affected areas include Bauchi, Giade, and Toro.
Dr. Mohammed provided specific details, stating, “As of today, Monday, 1st July, we have 50 suspected cases from three LGAs: Bauchi, Giade, and Toro. It started with 30 cases in Giade. A few days ago, we recorded four suspected cases in Bauchi LGA. Out of this number, we have one death from the suspected cases.”
He emphasized that health workers are diligently treating all suspected cases and that samples have been sent to the National Centre for Disease Control for confirmation.
“We have taken samples to the National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, and are awaiting results to determine the status of the cases,” he added.
DMohammed assured the public of the state’s preparedness to prevent an outbreak, noting the cooperation of international development partners such as UNICEF and WHO.
He highlighted that the testing process at the NCDC is time-consuming as samples are sent in batches of 100 and require thorough examination.
Reflecting on a past incident, he mentioned, “Some months ago, there was a reported case of gastroenteritis in Ningi when about 100 students had food poisoning. We promptly responded and ensured that it was treated.”
Mohammed also stated that the board is collaborating with agencies like BASEPA to clear waterways, ensuring proper drainage of rainwater and other wastewater.
He equally mentioned ongoing education and awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging the population to maintain hygiene standards to prevent cholera.
