At least one male adult was confirmed dead and several others injured in a tragic multiple-vehicle collision on Sunday along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident, which occurred at Ile-Epo Bus Stop in the Oko-Afa area.
Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, issued a statement detailing the agency’s response to the accident, which involved a series of vehicle collisions.
“The agency responded to distress calls made via the 767 and 112 toll-free lines at 09:33 hrs, activating its emergency response team from the Igando base,” he explained.
Upon arriving at the scene, LASEMA’s team found multiple vehicles involved in the crash.
The vehicles included a fully loaded truck, registration number FFF 754 XB; a white Toyota Hummer bus operated by Cross Country Transport with registration MUS 210 YJ, filled with passengers; and a Volkswagen commercial bus, registration LSR 166 YE.
A Nissan car, whose registration number was not disclosed, was also among the affected vehicles.
Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that one man lost his life in the crash. Several other injured victims were quickly transported to nearby hospitals by the Federal Road Safety Corps to receive medical attention.
“Further investigations revealed that the incident occurred due to reckless driving on the part of the truck driver, who lost control at high speed, resulting in a crash involving the three affected vehicles,” he added.
To ensure responder safety, LASEMA implemented critical safety measures and set up traffic control to ease vehicle movement along the busy expressway.
Following the on-site intervention, the three vehicles were removed and towed to Morogbo Police Station. The truck itself was cleared from the area to restore traffic flow.
In a further step, FRSC officials deposited the deceased’s body at the morgue before LASEMA’s arrival.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the need for heightened caution on Nigeria’s roadways.
