Celebrated Nigerian music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ will be laid to rest on Friday, August 30, in Lagos.
The multi-talented artist, whose contributions to music, film, and public service earned her a place in the hearts of many, passed away on July 30, 2024.
She died at the age of 72 at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at an event celebrating the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Stella Okoli.
According to her family’s announcement, Onwenu’s final journey will begin with a funeral service at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju.
This will be followed by a private burial ceremony at a vault in Ikoyi. The Service of Songs is scheduled from 10 am to 12 noon, with the burial to follow from 2 pm to 4 pm, as reported by CKN News.
Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy extends beyond her illustrious career as a musician with numerous hit songs. She was also a respected broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist.
She used her platform to advocate for social justice and champion women’s rights throughout her life.
She is survived by her two sons, who, like many others, will cherish her memory and the profound impact she had on Nigerian culture and society.
