Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke announced on Monday that his administration had begun dredging of at least 25 streams and rivers across the state as part of its erosion and flooding management efforts.
Adeleke spoke at this year’s International Sustainable Development Dialogue on the campus of Osun State University in Osogbo, with the theme ‘Making and Unmaking Africa: Global Development and Environmental Humanities,’ organised by the Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute.
The Governor who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, Timothy Olawuni, expressed his administration’s commitment to tacking environmental challenges, just as he urged residents to desist from blocking waterways with dirt.
He said, “Currently not less than 25 streams and rivers are receiving interventions ranging from dredging, desilting and clearing of clogged culverts.
“It is important however to appeal to the people to desist from actions that could exacerbate this avoidable problem,” he said.
