The Oyo State Government has ramped up its response to the recent outbreak of diphtheria, aiming to prevent its spread and protect public health.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade made this known in a statement.
According to the statement, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed this during a briefing at the Emergency Operations Centre in Ibadan.
She described diphtheria as a highly contagious bacterial infection transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, as well as direct contact with infected wounds.
“Diphtheria primarily affects the throat and upper airways, forming a thick, greyish membrane that can obstruct breathing,” she explained. “Symptoms include sore throat, fever, cough, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing, and, in severe cases, respiratory distress.”
To address the outbreak, Dr. Ajetunmobi said the government has intensified surveillance, strengthened case management, and launched vaccination campaigns. She added that healthcare workers are on high alert to ensure a swift response to any suspected cases.
She urged residents to adhere to precautionary measures, emphasizing the importance of vaccination, personal hygiene, and early medical intervention.
“Parents should ensure their children receive all three doses of the Pentavalent vaccine at six, ten, and fourteen weeks of age,” she advised. “Pregnant women should also receive the Tetanus-Diphtheria vaccine during antenatal care.”
Dr. Ajetunmobi further stressed the need for good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding the sharing of personal items.
“Avoid close contact with infected individuals and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms arise,” she cautioned.
