A tragic incident occurred in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state on Friday when an airplane carrying 62 people, including passengers and crew, crashed near the city of Vinhedo.
According to the AFP, the accident was confirmed by both firefighters and the airline, Voepass.
Although there has not yet been an official announcement regarding the number of casualties, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva indicated during a speech in Santa Catarina state that it appears there were no survivors.
He mentioned that the plane, which was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members, crashed with no apparent survivors.
The aircraft, which was operated by Voepass and designated as flight 2283, was en route from Cascavel in Parana state to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo.
Voepass released a statement acknowledging the accident but noted that details about the cause and the condition of those on board were still unknown.
In a statement Voepass reported “an accident involving flight 2283.”
“There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board,” it said.
Local media footage showed the aircraft descending rapidly before crashing, followed by a large plume of smoke rising from the site, which was located in what appeared to be a residential area.
The Fire Department of Sao Paulo reported via social media that seven teams were involved in the response efforts, though further details were not provided.
Vinhedo, the crash site, is a city of approximately 76,000 people, situated around 80 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo.
