The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a woman, Hauwa Sani, for attempting to smuggle 124 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition concealed in a gallon of palm oil.
The arrest took place on Friday, and a two-year-old child was with her at the time, according to a statement released by the police.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, disclosed the arrest in a statement posted on X.com on Saturday.
The suspect, who is reportedly from Katsina State, was also found in possession of a Tecno mobile phone and a cash sum of N78,500.
The statement detailed the operation: “On 23/8/2024 at about 1710hrs, based on credible information, police operatives attached to the Keffi Division intercepted and arrested one Hauwa Sani, along with a two-year-old child from Doro village, Katsina State.”
Further investigations revealed that Sani had obtained the ammunition from Rafin Sanyi village in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
She then concealed the rounds in a gallon of palm oil, planning to transport them to Katsina State.
“The suspect received a supply of the ammunition at Rafin Sanyi village and attempted to smuggle them to Katsina State before she was apprehended,” Nansel stated.
In response to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Shehu Nadada, has directed that the suspect and the recovered items be transferred to the Force Intelligence Department at the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further investigation.
The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by the Nasarawa State Police Command to curb illegal arms trafficking within the region.
