A tea vendor named Abdulrashidu Ya’u in Jigawa State is accused of killing a 20-year-old man, Hassan Garba, over allegations of stealing items including bread, milk, noodles, and petrol.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 19, 2024, in Sararai village, Jigawar Tsada town, located within Dutse Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Jigawa State Command, DSP Lawan Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday. According to the statement, a police patrol team was dispatched to the scene following a report of the crime.
“Upon receiving the report, a standby patrol team promptly rushed to the scene, apprehended the suspect, and conveyed the victim to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for immediate medical attention,” said Adam.
Tragically, the efforts to save Garba’s life were unsuccessful. “Upon arrival, the medical doctor on duty certified the 20-year-old man dead. His remains were examined, photographed, and later released to his relatives for burial according to Islamic rites,” Adam added.
During the investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, the suspect reportedly admitted to the crime, citing repeated thefts by the deceased as his motive.
“The deceased had upset him by stealing his goods to the point where he had informed his parents about it, but nothing had been done,” DSP Adam noted.
The suspect further confessed to apprehending the young man and, in a fit of rage, decided to tie him up and assault him with a whip. “Neighbours within the vicinity heard the deceased’s cries for help but were unable to intervene until the police arrived,” the PPRO added.
Adam assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that the suspect would be charged in court to “face the full wrath of the law” once the investigation is completed.
In a separate incident, DSP Lawan Adam also reported the arrest of a 24-year-old man, Aliyu Aliyu, in connection with the theft of a motorcycle. On August 20, 2024, at approximately 3:00 pm, Mamuda Yusuf of Kadume village, Malam Madori LGA, reported the theft of his black jinchen motorcycle from Hadejia General Hospital. Following the report, the police launched a patrol to locate the stolen vehicle.
“On August 21, 2024, at about 7:00 am, Aliyu Aliyu of Gagulmari Quarters, Hadejia LGA, was arrested with the stolen motorcycle in his possession,” Adam stated. During questioning at the Divisional Crime Branch in Hadejia, the suspect admitted to the crime. “The suspect has since been charged to court for prosecution,” the police spokesperson confirmed.
