The Zamfara State Police Command has strongly condemned the killing of SP Halliru Liman, a police officer reportedly shot by military personnel.
According to The PUNCH, the command has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.
The spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, ASP Yazid Abubakar released a statement on Thursday expressing the command’s deep concern over the “senseless killing” of SP Liman. Until his death, Liman served as the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Wasagu Division in Kebbi State.
According to Abubakar, SP Liman was en route to Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi State to attend a scheduled meeting when he was stopped by military personnel near the Danmarke area in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara.
The personnel, attached to Operation Dadarin Daji, reportedly shot Liman despite his clear identification as a police officer.
“In a shocking display of aggression, the leader of the military personnel, identified as Hassan, pointed his gun at SP Liman and shot him in the head, resulting in his instant death,” Abubakar stated.
The incident occurred on August 28, 2024, around 10:30 am, when SP Liman was on his way to attend a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi.
Abubakar described the circumstances of the killing as “alarming and unacceptable,” urging the authorities to act swiftly.
“The military’s actions are a clear violation of the rules of engagement and the principles of inter-agency cooperation,” Abubakar emphasized.
“We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this egregious incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
He further stressed the importance of maintaining harmony between security agencies, noting, “The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that undermine public trust.”
The statement concluded with condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman, with a pledge from the police command to pursue justice. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman and assure them that we will do everything in our power to ensure justice is served,” Abubakar said.
