The Enugu State Police Command has expressed appreciation to the state’s residents for maintaining peace and refraining from participating in the nationwide hunger protests.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the commendation was given by the State Police Command’s Spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, during a press briefing in Enugu on Thursday, addressing the impact of the protest in the state.
Ndukwe noted that Enugu state has remained calm and peaceful, adding, “The police have witnessed commendable cooperation from the residents of the state within all nooks and crannies today,” he said.He emphasized the importance of this ongoing cooperation, urging residents to continue with their daily activities without fear. “The Command wants all residents to go about their legitimate businesses as police operatives and sister security agencies are ready to ensure safety of lives and property in the state.”
Ndukwe mentioned that police presence is robust throughout the state, with operatives stationed strategically.
He confirmed that no negative incidents had been reported.
In Enugu metropolis, the response to the national hunger protest was notably subdued. Major roads and streets were quiet, with most residents staying indoors.
Many businesses, including malls and shops in the coal city, remained closed, and there was minimal vehicular movement.
A trader at Mayor Market along Agbani Road, Obi Asika, opened his shop after assessing the situation.
“I have monitored the situation, which I noticed is calm, and that is why I opened my shop for my daily business,” he explained.
Similarly, Ndu Maduka, a commercial tricycle operator, chose to operate within his local area.
“I was operating within the vicinity of where I lived for now and would continue to monitor the situation,” he said.
It is noteworthy that the national hunger protest, organized to last from August 1 to August 10, has seen varied responses across different states, with Enugu standing out for its residents’ calm and restraint.
