The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended 16 alleged cult members who have been terrorizing and killing people in the capital city of Awka.
The spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement.
He also mentioned that 21 others suspected to be involved in the killings were on the run and declared wanted.
Awka, the capital city, has witnessed many cult-related killings in the past month, with no fewer than 34 persons killed since Easter.
This surge in violence prompted Hon. Henry Mbachu, the lawmaker representing Awka South 1 constituency, and other stakeholders to raise the alarm last Tuesday, stating that enough was enough.
In response to the crisis, the lawmaker and other stakeholders of Awka origin announced plans to hold a summit in May to find a lasting solution to the mayhem.
The Police Command, on its part, arrested no fewer than 16 alleged suspects involved in the violence.
According to Ikenga, the arrests were made during a series of intelligence-led manhunts and on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye.
The CP and other senior officers have vowed that the cultists responsible for the spate of killings in the capital must face justice for their crimes.
