A State House of Assembly member and a former Local Government Chairman has been arrested by the Zamfara State Police Command for alleged involvement in banditry.
According to The PUNCH, State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dalijan, announced the arrest of on Wednesday.
This announcement came during a visit from Thomas Parker, the officer in charge of the Counterterrorism Unit under the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime, at the command headquarters in Gusau.
Dalijan refrained from disclosing the identities of the arrested lawmaker and former council boss.
He appealed to the United Nations for support in establishing a forensic laboratory in Zamfara, highlighting the inconvenience of conducting forensic analyses in Lagos.
Dalijan also requested the UN to replicate in Zamfara the support provided in Maiduguri, including training in investigative techniques and the creation of forensic laboratories to expedite the investigation and prosecution of suspects.
The commissioner noted a reduction in crime rates in the state, attributing it to the collaborative efforts of security agencies and Community Protection Guards to eliminate terrorists who have migrated from Maiduguri to Zamfara in Northwest Nigeria.
Parker mentioned that the UN delegation was responding to Governor Dauda Lawal’s appeal for assistance in addressing the state’s insecurity.
During his visit, Parker sought to gather more information about the state’s security threats and expressed the UN’s readiness to assess the security situation, identify the causes and challenges, and formulate strategies to address the threats.
