The Ogun State Police Command has arrested officers accused of demanding money from the family of a missing seven-year-old girl before taking action on the case.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, revealed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, confirming that the officers are currently in detention awaiting disciplinary measures.
In his statement, Adejobi condemned the officers’ actions, describing them as “inhuman, apathetic, and unprofessional.” He emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and assured the public that the case is being handled with urgency.
“The policemen who demanded money before attending to the case have been arrested and are now in detention for disciplinary action,” Adejobi said. “We condemn such an act and will not tolerate it.”
Addressing concerns about the missing child, Adejobi expressed confidence that the police would locate her soon. He also called on the victim’s family to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
“The Ogun State Police Command has been on the case,” he noted. “The girl will be found as soon as possible.”
The incident, first reported by The Punch, involves the abduction of a seven-year-old girl in Ota, Ogun State. According to the report, the child, whose mother operates a point-of-sale business, was allegedly kidnapped by a regular customer.
The suspect reportedly visited the shop, bought food for the girl, and later sent her to buy sachet water, during which she disappeared.
When the mother approached the police to report her daughter’s disappearance, officers allegedly demanded ₦10,000 to file the case and another ₦30,000 to track the suspect’s phone number.
