The Borno State Police Command has announced significant achievements in crime prevention and law enforcement for the year 2024, including the recovery of 18 unexploded explosive devices and the arrest of 721 suspects linked to various crimes.
The State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, shared the updates during the command’s end-of-year briefing in Maiduguri. He highlighted the strides made in combating criminal activities and ensuring public safety across the state.
“This year, the command recorded remarkable successes in tackling crime, leading to the arrest of 721 individuals involved in armed robbery, sexual and gender-based violence, kidnapping, theft, and other serious offences,” Lawal said.
He added that law enforcement officers recovered 18 unexploded and improvised explosive devices, six firearms, 13 stolen vehicles and tricycles, as well as a significant quantity of illicit drugs and substances.
Lawal attributed these accomplishments to proactive policing strategies and reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining security in Maiduguri and other towns.
“With the Inspector-General of Police’s target of reducing crime by 30% by 2025, we are determined to sustain robust measures to ensure safety and security across the state,” he stated.
The Commissioner applauded the Borno State Government for its ongoing support of the police, particularly in renovating police stations and barrack accommodations in areas like Pulka, Gwoza, Monguno, Lugumani, Banki, and Benisheikh.
“This assistance has greatly boosted the morale of our officers and improved service delivery,” Lawal noted.
He also commended Governor Babagana Zulum for enacting the Borno State Penal Code Law 2023 and implementing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act. According to him, these legal frameworks have streamlined prosecution processes in the state.
Looking ahead, Lawal emphasized that the command’s priorities for 2025 align with the state government’s 10-year strategic plan, which focuses on rebuilding displaced communities and fostering resilience among returnees.
“We are fully committed to supporting these objectives through targeted and community-oriented policing efforts,” he assured.
