The Anambra State Police Command recently intervened to save a 27-year-old man, Alozie John, who had attempted suicide in the Umunnachi community within Dunukofia Local Government Area.
John, a livestock dealer originally from Isielu LGA in Ebonyi State, faced severe financial distress due to a debt of N1.2 million owed to his livestock supplier.
His suicide attempt stemmed from this financial burden.
On August 23, 2024, the police were alerted when they intercepted a WhatsApp message from John.
The Spokesperson for the state Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the message revealed John’s intentions to end his life by ingesting a toxic substance.
Ikenga stated, “On 23/8/2024, Anambra police rescued a young man who attempted to take his own life. He was debriefed, rendered medical assistance, and kept in safe custody for monitoring.”
John, who sells live chicken, was reported to have ingested the harmful chemical but did not experience any immediate adverse effects.
Following the rescue, his mother was contacted and is now collaborating with the police to facilitate John’s evaluation, references, and transfer to a more suitable facility for comprehensive care.
