Ahead of the upcoming local government elections in Jigawa on October 5, the State Police Command has pledged to eliminate the threat of political thugs to ensure a peaceful voting process.
According to The PUNCH, the Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, made this commitment during a press briefing in Dutse on Tuesday.
Commissioner Abdullahi emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of political thuggery to maintain order during the election.
“We are taking decisive steps to locate and neutralize areas where political thugs operate before the election begins,” he stated. “Some of the notorious ones will be arrested and kept in custody until after the election.”
The police command has already begun efforts to identify potential hotspots for violence and ensure security is heightened.
In addition, the commissioner revealed that meetings with the State Independent Electoral Commission, government officials, and other stakeholders have commenced to establish a collaborative approach to securing the elections.
Abdullahi also announced plans to gather all participating candidates and party leaders for a peace accord signing ahead of the election. “We shall invite all the candidates and leaders of the various political parties participating in the election to sign a peace accord,” he noted.
The police chief assured the public that every necessary security measure would be taken to prevent any disruption of the election.
“We are working around the clock to ensure the state remains peaceful, as Jigawa is known for being one of the most peaceful states in the country,” Abdullahi added.
The police command has vowed to maintain a proactive approach in safeguarding the state and ensuring that the election process runs smoothly.
