The Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 17, covering Ondo and Ekiti States, Musibau Omolabi, has emphasized the adoption of community policing and stakeholder engagement as key strategies to combat crime in the region.
Omolabi, who officially assumed duty at the zonal headquarters in Akure, Ondo State, on Thursday, expressed his commitment to collaborating with residents to eliminate kidnapping and other criminal activities in both states.
Speaking to journalists upon his resumption, Omolabi encouraged members of the public to maintain a friendly relationship with the police and assured them that his office remains accessible for intelligence-sharing to enhance security efforts.
“My doors are open to everybody. I always tell people, don’t be hostile to policemen. That is what the Inspector General of Police is advocating—robust community policing and inclusiveness. Our goal is to involve all citizens in policing efforts,” he stated.
He further stressed the importance of public cooperation, adding, “We are working together to secure our communities. You are free to visit my office at any time. We will encourage the flow of information and intelligence from the people, and we will also motivate our officers.”
The AIG disclosed that he had already met with the Commissioners of Police in Ondo and Ekiti States, where he discussed plans for intensive supervision, as well as the training and retraining of personnel to enhance operational effectiveness.
“There will be continuous training and retraining, both locally and internationally. The Inspector General of Police has also put in place various capacity-building programs to improve professionalism and efficiency within the force,” Omolabi explained.
He noted that the current IGP remains committed to the welfare and development of police officers, ensuring they have the necessary support to perform their duties effectively.
“The IGP has provided resources to enable us to carry out our responsibilities. When officers feel supported and motivated, their efficiency in maintaining law and order improves significantly,” he added.
Omolabi assured that his leadership in Zone 17 would create a safe and conducive environment for businesses and residents, reinforcing the police force’s dedication to upholding security in Ondo and Ekiti States.
