The Osun State Police Command has issued a stern warning against the celebration of cultism scheduled for August 8, known as ‘8/8’.
The command, through its spokesperson SP Yemisi Opalola, in a statement, emphasized that any unlawful gatherings will not be tolerated.
The police have received credible intelligence about plans by certain cult groups to mark the day, and they are actively monitoring these activities.
“In view of this, the command, therefore, warns cultists and other unscrupulous elements in the state to jettison the plan or any of such action(s) forthwith as the command is earnestly monitoring their activities.”
The statement further stressed that the police, alongside other security agencies and the Civilian Joint Task Force, will not allow any activities that could disrupt the state’s peace, as the celebration of 8/8 could potentially lead to violence and property damage.
“Consequently, the command, in collaboration with other security agents and Civilian JTF, will not tolerate any unlawful gathering or assembly that will endanger the peaceful atmosphere of the state, as the plan to mark 8/8 may lead to bloodshedding and destruction of properties,” the PPRO said.
The command has urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and caution their children and wards against participating in illegal activities, noting, “The command will not spare anyone who constitutes any threat to law and order.”
Additionally, the Command has implemented comprehensive security measures in anticipation of the Osun-Osogbo festival, which will culminate on Friday.
Residents and festival-goers are encouraged to stay alert and ensure a secure and enjoyable celebration.
“Finally, the Osun State Police Command further appeals to members of the public to be vigilant and give prompt and actionable information in case of any infraction of the law,” the command added.
