The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched an investigation into the condition of boarding facilities in public schools following public outrage over a viral video showing students at Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, being served poorly prepared meals.
State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, announced this in Uyo on Saturday, revealing that the principal of the school, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Speaking on the issue, Etiebet said, “The video, which shows students being fed meals that are both unpalatable and non-nutritious, is deeply disturbing. It necessitated my unscheduled visit to the school, during which I directed an immediate review of boarding facilities there and in 25 other public secondary schools across the state.”
The commissioner explained that the review will encompass hostels, dining halls, recreation areas, menus, kitchens, and sanitary facilities.
According to her, the effort will be overseen by permanent secretaries from the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.
While acknowledging that the state’s free education policy only covers tuition fees, Etiebet urged parents to fulfill their roles in supporting their children.
“Parents, who have been relieved of tuition fees, must also take up basic parental responsibilities. Nonetheless, the welfare and dignity of our students remain a priority for Governor Umo Eno’s administration,” she said.
The commissioner assured the public that the government is determined to ensure that public schools meet acceptable standards for the well-being of students and staff.
“Governor Umo Eno is fully committed to education as outlined in the ARISE agenda,” she added
