The National Youth Service Corps has issued a statement encouraging pregnant corps members to fulfill their national service duties, emphasizing that “pregnancy is not a disease.”
According to The PUNCH, the call was made by the Kogi State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Mofoluwaso Williams, during her presentation titled “Tackling emerging challenges in corps administration through NYSC/stakeholders.”
Mrs. Williams delivered this message at the Kogi Annual 2023 Corps Employers Workshop, which took place at the Government House in Lokoja. In her address, she urged employers and organizations not to accept pregnancy as a valid excuse for corps members to evade their responsibilities to the nation.
This statement highlights the NYSC’s commitment to upholding its mandate and ensuring that all corps members, regardless of their personal circumstances, actively contribute to national development during their service year.
She said, “Every workplace has its own peculiar challenges, and so is our various places of primary assignments where corps members are engaged for the one-year mandatory service to their fatherland.
“Pregnancy is not a disease; therefore, organisations should not allow corps members to use this as an alibi in any form.
“Pregnant or nursing corps members who use pregnancy as an alibi for absenteeism or rudeness to officers should not be tolerated.”
