Several journalists and activists were detained by security agents and taken to undisclosed locations on Thursday in Cross River State.
According to The PUNCH, among the detained is Mr. Jonathan Ugbal, managing editor of the online newspaper CrossRiverWatch.
Reports indicate that the journalists were monitoring a peaceful protest around the Mary Slessor roundabout when security personnel, arriving in four Hilux vehicles and SUVs, apprehended them.
The protest marked the beginning of a planned 10-day nationwide demonstration.
Earlier that day, Ugbal had posted a video showing deserted roads around the protest site.
Human rights activist James Ibor condemned the arrests, describing them as “reprehensible.” He challenged the authorities to provide evidence of any violent behavior by those detained.
Ibor suggested that the security agents might be linked to the state governor, Senator Bassey Otu, but expressed hope that Governor Otu, known for his people-centric leadership, would not condone such actions.
“This situation is deeply disappointing. We urge Governor Otu to ensure the immediate release of these journalists and activists, who we strongly believe are in government custody,” Ibor stated.
