As the implimentation of the new naira redesigned continues to affect the living standard of the people and the Central Bank of Nigeria insist on swapping old naira notes, The Governors of Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has warned business owners and the entire residents of the State to desist from rejecting the old naira notes.
He vowed that those who reject old notes will be prosecuted.
The governor, who stated this on Wednesday, through a statement issued by the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, noted that, whosoever caught, rejecting the notes, will face the wrapt of the law.
The statement said, “the State Government has joined the dispute at the supreme court, which today adjourned the hearing of the matter till February 22.
“When the matter first came up on February 8, the apex court said the old notes remained legal tender. The position has not changed.
“The State Government hereby warns those rejecting the old notes, to desist from doing so, or face prosecution.
“It is against the law, to reject the old notes, as doing so is contrary to the position of the supreme court.”
Meanwhile, in its commitment to alleviate poverty and ease the tension caused by the CBN by the CBN’s directive on the old notes, the Lagos State Government has commenced the distribution of the food packs, as a result of the fulfilment of promise by the governor of the State.
One would recall that, the state government also announced a 50% slash on all the state owned transportation system, resently, to ease people off the effects of the scarcity of naira and general enoconomy crisis, witnessed in the country, due to the scarcity of naira and fuel.
