The NFF faces a daunting challenge in securing highly sought-after Herve Renard as the next coach of the Super Eagles.
Renard has demanded a monthly salary of $180,000, approximately N253 million, among several other conditions.
According to Vanguard, a top official of the NFF confirmed, “Yes, the NFF have made contact with Renard for the Super Eagles job, but the biggest stumbling block is that he is demanding a salary of $180,000 (a month), which in Naira is almost close to 300 Million.”
“This will be the highest ever paid to a coach and the NFF just cannot afford this. This may well be a wild goose chase.”
Reports indicate that Egypt has offered Renard $1.9 million, while his name has also surfaced in discussions regarding the new coach of the United States of America.
Renard, 54, boasts African Cup Nations victories with both Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire.
Previously, the immediate past foreign coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, accepted a significant pay cut to extend his contract until the delayed AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
Peseiro started on $70,000 per month, which was later reduced to $50,000, and even then, he faced delays in payment for up to 13 months at times.
Sports Minister John Enoh has reiterated that it is the NFF’s responsibility to fund a foreign coach for the national team.
