The House of Representatives has asked the National Universities Commission to halt the implementation of a rise in university tuition prices.
According to Channels, this was contained in a motion by Aliyu Sani Madaki.
Among the institutions he named as having increased tuition were the University of Nigeria at Nsukka, the University of Nigeria at Uyo, the University of Nigeria at Maiduguri, the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture at Umudike, and the Federal University at Dutse.
Concern was expressed in the green chamber about the fact that this fee increase was occurring at the same time that the country’s poverty level was deteriorating, inflation was high, unemployment was high, and the price of fuel had recently increased.
They were concerned that the hike may disturb the studies of a number of students who couldn’t pay the fees; while many of them would be forced to postpone their studies, others might completely drop out.
They also emphasised that the raise may exacerbate the nation’s already tense position because students were already threatening to overthrow the Federal Government, which would have terrible ramifications for the entire nation.
Additionally, the House requested that the Federal Government rescind the recent increase in secondary school tuition in Unity.
