Some residents in the iIupeju area of Lagos State cheated death after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday.
Punch Metro was first alerted by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency who confirmed that the incident occurred around 12:45am due to the ageing of the structure.
Our correspondent who swiftly arrived at the scene of the incident confirmed that the structure was a two-storey boys’ quarters house in a church on no 15, Oke Arin street, off Shyllon Ilupeju, Onipanu, Lagos.
Although no one was trapped in the rubble after the collapse, an anonymous resident told our correspondent that an individual sustained an injury while trying to gain access into the collapsing structure to rescue his belonging.
Confirming the report, the Lagos State emergency team noted the injured resident has been taken to a hospital for treatment.
“Fortunately, no loss of life. However, one adult male sustained a minor injury and has been taken to hospital. The affected building has been cordoned off in order to prevent any threat,” the alert read.
As of the time of filing this report, it is unknown how many occupants lived in the building before the collapse but our correspondent gathered that their properties were trapped in the collapse.
The building also collapsed on a nearby school on the street but thankfully the school was observing the two-day public holiday announced by the Federal Government and there were no pupils or teachers on the premise at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, an integrity test is expected to be conducted on the surrounding building while a weak two-storey structure still standing behind the church is expected to be demolished.
