A tragic stampede in Okija community, Anambra State, claimed the lives of several residents on Saturday morning during a rice distribution event.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victims, mostly women, were caught in the chaos as the crowd surged forward to collect the distributed items.
Social media videos from the scene show lifeless bodies on the ground, with some injured individuals rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
This unfortunate event follows closely on the heels of another stampede earlier in the week in Ibadan, Oyo State, where over 35 people, mostly children, lost their lives during a carnival.
The Okija stampede is the second rice distribution-related disaster of the year.
In March, a similar incident at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, led to the deaths of several students during the distribution of rice donated by the state government.
