The Russian Football Federation is seeking to exit the governing body of European football, even as it explore the possibility of joining the Asian Football Confederation.
It would be recalled that following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February, FIFA and UEFA banned all national and domestic teams in Russia from participating professionally, and they have no intention of removing the ban due to the ongoing crisis.
According to ESPN, the Russian football hierarchy is sure that joining the AFC would provide a more warm welcome back should FIFA decide to lift the ban.
On December 23, the RFU met in Moscow to talk about the possible change. Now, sources have told a sports publication that a final decision is likely to be made on Friday.
Reports say that UEFA is aware of the situation and is waiting for the RFU to explain its position before taking action.
Australia quit the Oceania Football Confederation in 2006 and joined the AFC. Since then, it has played in qualifiers and tournaments as an Asian country.
