Italian and Newcastle international, Sandro Tonali, has been banned 10- years for breaches of Italian betting regulations.
This was disclosed by popular Italian Football Journalist, Fabrizio Romano, through his official social media platforms.
“Sandro Tonali has been banned for 10 month — season over for the Italian. 10 month suspension from football games. 8 month rehab plan for gambling addition.
“Tonali, back in action for Newcastle in August 24 as he will also miss Euro 2024 with Italian national team.”
This would mean Tonali will be unavailable for selection for Eddie Howe’s team until late August next year and will miss the European Championship in Germany next summer should Italy qualify.
The ban was halved because Tonali co-operated, dropped to 18 months because he gave evidence, and the ban from playing set at ten months plus a further eight months of “alternative” sentences.
Tonali played his last game of the season on Wednesday night coming off the bench for Newcastle as they lost 1-0 to Dortmund. Eddie Howe has pledged his full support and says the player will remain at Newcastle long-term.
