Atalanta’s hopes of securing the 2024/25 Serie A title have nearly evaporated following a 1-0 loss to Lazio at the Gewiss Stadium.
This defeat marks their seventh consecutive league match without a win at home in 2025.
Given their recent poor form at home, it took Atalanta some time to find their rhythm, and Lazio’s defense remained resolute when they did. Davide Zappacosta and Mateo Retegui both had key passes blocked, resulting in corners that, despite Atalanta’s efforts, were successfully cleared by the visitors.
Lazio’s defensive strategy of containment meant that clear-cut chances for Atalanta were hard to come by.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru did have a promising pass blocked just before the half-hour mark, but that was as close as they came to breaking the deadlock.
Things took a turn for the worse for Atalanta when Marco Baroni was forced to make an early substitution, taking off Nuno Tavares after a hard challenge from Sead Kolasinac.
Despite continued pressure from Atalanta, Lazio’s defense stood firm, and even three more corners for the home side came to nothing. Lazio, sensing Atalanta’s mounting frustration, quickly turned up the pressure in the final third just after the break.
Dele-Bashiru, still very active, had a fantastic chance to score, unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box, only to be denied by a stellar save from Marco Carnesecchi.
However, the Nigerian was more successful moments later. After a world-class stop from Christos Mandas on a Mateo Retegui shot, Dele-Bashiru flicked a clever header to Gustav Isaksen during a counter-attack. With Carnesecchi off his line, Isaksen slid the ball into the net, netting his sixth goal of the season.
Atalanta needed an immediate response, and Zappacosta nearly provided one, collecting a rebound just outside the box. However, Mandas was equal to the task, making a routine save.
The momentum did not shift, and Lazio had a chance to finish off the match when Luca Pellegrini failed to convert a chance in the 75th minute. His weak shot was easily saved by Carnesecchi, who then dealt with the ensuing corner without issue.
