Popular Nigerian singer, Seun Kuti, has voiced his support for Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, following an interview with Arise TV journalist, Laila Johnson.
During a media session discussing the construction of the Calabar-Lagos coastal lane, Johnson asked a question. Umahi interjected, stating, “Sister, I was raised in the village, I don’t understand ‘phoné,'” referring to phonetics.
In response, Johnson explained that it’s just her way of speaking. Umahi then requested interpreters, but Johnson insisted that there were enough people around him to translate.
After this exchange, Umahi assured that they had obtained all necessary approvals for the project.
However, Umahi’s response to Johnson’s question was met with criticism.
Kuti interpreted Johnson’s comment as disrespectful, questioning why she would embarrass a minister of works.
He concluded by speculating about a possible clandestine love affair between Umahi and Johnson.
“The Minister of works was busy explaining himself for all news station, one girl wey dey speak phonetic dey disrespect our minister. The Minister self deserves respect. May be he don toast the girl before. The Minister has disgraced himself,” Kuti said in pidgin English.
“When Minister of works busy explaining himself talking about destroying the properties of these rich Nigerians. That is a national issue. Every prominent journalist discussed this matter. Even those who are not concerned contributed to this issue,” he added.
