Atletico Madrid’s perseverance paid off as Giuliano Simeone, son of manager Diego Simeone, scored his debut goal for the team, helping secure a 2-0 victory over Las Palmas in their La Liga clash on Sunday.
Alexander Sorloth also found the net in the match, further solidifying Atletico’s position in third place with 23 points from 12 games.
Notably, Atletico have played one less match than Real Madrid, currently second in the standings, after Real’s game against Valencia was postponed due to severe flooding in the eastern region.
Reflecting on his milestone, Giuliano said, “I’m very happy for my first official goal for Atletico Madrid but I also want to mention everything that’s going on in Valencia. For the victims, I send all my strength and support.”
The scoring began in the 37th minute when Nahuel Molina delivered a pinpoint long ball up the right side, allowing Giuliano to capitalize on Las Palmas’ high defensive line.
The 21-year-old charged forward and expertly placed a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, who stretched but couldn’t reach it.
Atletico nearly extended their lead just before halftime as Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar with a powerful left-footed attempt from a Pablo Barrios assist.
Las Palmas faced further setbacks early in the second half when Cillessen was forced off the pitch due to an injury sustained while attempting to block a shot from Molina.
Atletico, who fired a total of 15 shots compared to Las Palmas’ single attempt, clinched their second goal in the 83rd minute.
Rodrigo De Paul split the defense with a well-timed through ball, setting up Sorloth, who calmly slotted it in with his left foot, putting the game beyond Las Palmas’ reach.
Looking ahead, Atletico’s packed schedule continues as they prepare for a Champions League showdown against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday before resuming La Liga action against Mallorca next Sunday.
