Christian Eriksen made a triumphant return to the European Championship, scoring 1,100 days after his cardiac arrest, though Slovenia secured a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2024 Group C opener on Sunday.
Eriksen, who had collapsed during Denmark’s first Euro 2020 match against Finland, received a smart flick from Jonas Wind and netted the opener in the 17th minute.
He had further opportunities to score but missed a couple of left-footed attempts, while Jan Oblak made a crucial save to deny Rasmus Hojlund’s close-range effort.Eriksen, earning his 132nd cap for Denmark, dominated the first half in Stuttgart, precisely 1,100 days after his cardiac incident.
However, Denmark’s missed chances proved costly as Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko hit the post, and Erik Janza’s deflected shot equalized, wrong-footing Kasper Schmeichel.
Both sides had additional scoring opportunities, with Oblak making another significant save against Hojlund and Adam Gnezda Cerin missing a header from close range.
Slovenia’s Sesko, previously quiet, hit the woodwork with a powerful 25-yard shot before Janza’s deflected effort secured a deserved draw 13 minutes from time.
