Sporting Lisbon head coach, Ruben Amorim has debunked reports linking him to Liverpool’s job.
Reports had earlier revealed that Liverpool had struck a verbal agreement with Ruben Amorim for him to take over at the end of the season and replace the departing Jurgen Klopp.
In the reports, a three-year-deal was said to have been agreed between Liverpool and the 39-year-old.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding how much Liverpool will pay to bring Amorim in. Previously, it has been claimed that Liverpool will have to pay a huge €20million, £17m, for the signature of manager.
Reacting to this via a statement @farbrizioromano on X Rúben Amorim said, “I did NOT meet Liverpool for any interview and there’s no agreement, it’s not true.
He added, “I’m Sporting manager, I want to win here and I didn’t meet any club. Nothing has been agreed”.
While warning that the rumour should stop henceforth, Amorim said, “Stop with this story. This is the last time I speak about my future.”
On January 26 2024, Jürgen Klopp had announced his decision to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the current season, having informed the club’s ownership of his wish to leave his position when the 2023-24 campaign comes to a close.
The 56-year-old guided the Merseysiders to another Wembley final and continue to oversee the team’s remaining fixtures of 2023-24 before bringing the curtain down on a glorious eight-and-a-half-year managerial reign at Anfield, which has seen the club win six major trophies under his guidance to date.
While confirming his decision to Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp outlined the reasons behind it.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.
“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.
“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.
“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth,” he said.
