Nigerian star artist, Yemi Alade, has been designated as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa artist for the month of January.
The EQUAL initiative, which recognizes Alade, aims to provide female musicians with the tools they need to advance their careers and connect with listeners around the world via various playlists.
According to media reports, the awardees also get off-platform coaching and resources to assist them advance their musical careers even further.
The Afro-Pop performer joins other Nigerian celebrities who have already taken part in the project, including Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, and FAVE.
Commenting on the recognition, Yemi Alade said, “It’s a great time to be alive. Female artists have quadrupled in number compared to a decade ago.”
“The only thing we ask now, in this male-dominated industry, is for EQUAL opportunities. EQUAL opportunities to be seen, for our talents to be showcased, because in the ‘universe of music,’ there is no gender, only potential, creativity, and pure magic.”
Spotify further described Alade as a gifted musician, adding that the recognition will enhance her talent.
“Yemi is such a talented artist who has already carved out a solid place in the music industry. Spotify is looking forward to showcasing her talent to an even wider audience, and working with her to further map out her success.”
In 2015 and 2016, the singer won the Best Female Artist Award at the MTV Africa Music Awards. She has released four albums and one EP.
Alade is a United Nations Development Program Goodwill Ambassador in addition to focusing on her acting profession. She has had numerous nominations for BET and MOBO Awards.
Alade is the first African female artist to gather more than 100 million views on YouTube and VEVO with her track “Johnny,” which is currently considered the most watched video from an African female popstar in history.
To advance cultural, educational, and marketing efforts throughout West Africa, French manufacturing companies BiC and Alade established a cooperation in September 2022.
