Lagos State’s Nigeria Labour Congress chapter has taken a decisive step by barricading the entrance to the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, in protest against the Federal Government’s failure to implement the Minimum Wage demand.
This action, part of a directive from the NLC’s national body under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has effectively halted operations at the Secretariat.
Arriving as early as 7:30 am on Monday, the striking workers closed the access gates to the Secretariat, denying entry to workers and vehicles.
The area was cordoned off by armed security personnel from the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command to maintain order and prevent any disruption by miscreants.
The shutdown includes the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, the state House of Assembly, various ministries, departments, agencies, banks, and other businesses within the premises.
Workers were directed via messages circulated on platforms to stay away from the office and remain at home.
The state NLC chairman, Mrs Funmi Sessi, was on-site to oversee the strike’s compliance.
She was captured in a video expressing frustration over the government’s insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian workers amid the country’s harsh economic conditions.
Sessi directed officers to ensure strict control of the entrance gates and also urged them to extend the strike to other public offices in the state, including courts and electricity branches.
Despite the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ directive to join the strike, some newsmen from various media houses were seen monitoring the situation.
As of press time, there were no reported incidents of lawlessness, and the strike appeared to be fully complied with by Lagos workers.
