Some students of the Fakunle Unity High School, a secondary school in Osogbo, Osun State, have been hospitalised after fainting after inhaling teargas released by riot policemen from Mopol 39 Base on Tuesday.
A school source who preferred anonymity for fear of attack explained that the students were seated for their different classes when tear gas sprayed by the police officers found its way into the school building located by the Mopol Base.
Reports revealed that none of the instructors contacted wanted to comment on the situation.
However, a father who only wanted to be known as Gideon, informed newsmen that he had been ordered to check the Osun State University Teaching Hospital in the state capital for his daughter, who was allegedly affected by the tear gas.
When contacted, the Osun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident.
She revealed that the riot policemen were engaging in their usual morning drills when the incident happened.
Opalola went ahead to apologise to those who were affected.
She said, “I just spoke to the people at the Mopol base. They were just engaging in their morning drills, which involved the use of tear gas.
“We apologise for the inconvenience. There will be necessary adjustments in operation since the base is now close to where other people also operate their businesses.”
