The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that Sunday, July 7, 2024, will be the first day of Muharram, signifying the commencement of the Islamic year 1446 after Hijrah.
This announcement was detailed in a statement issued on Friday by Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs for the Sultanate Council in Sokoto.
Junaidu explained that there were no reports from the national or various moon sighting committees across the country regarding the sighting of the moon.
He stated, “The national and the various moon sighting committees across the country did not receive any report on the sighting of the new moon of Muharram on Friday, 5th July, 2024, which is the 29th of Dhul’Hijja 1445 AH, hence Saturday, 6th of July, is the 30th of Dhul’Hijja.”
In his message to Nigerian Muslims, the Sultan extended his felicitations for the new year and encouraged them to consistently pray for the nation’s peace, progress, and development.
