The Super Eagles of Nigeria have arrived in Kigali, Rwanda, as they prepare for their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Amavubi Stars.
The team touched down in the Rwandan capital on September 8, 2024, flying in on a chartered aircraft that departed earlier that day from Victor Attah International Airport.
They landed at Kigali International Airport at dawn, ready to take on their Rwandan counterparts.
This marks Nigeria’s first return to Kigali since their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, where they faced Zimbabwe in a tightly contested game.
The match was held at the Huye Stadium, a 20,000-seat venue with artificial turf, and ended in a draw, with the Super Eagles mounting a determined comeback to secure a point.
However, the stakes are different now, as the Super Eagles gear up to play Rwanda at the larger Amahoro Stadium, the country’s biggest sporting arena.
The 45,508-seat multipurpose venue is not only the home ground of the Rwandan national team, but also a hub for concerts and major public events in Rwanda.
The Super Eagles will be looking to build on their momentum and secure a win in this critical AFCON qualifier.
In their opening AFCON 2025 qualifier, the Super Eagles put on a commanding performance, defeating the Benin Republic 3-0.
Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock in extra time to give Nigeria the lead, followed by Victor Osimhen, who converted a cross from Wilfred Ndidi to make it 2-0. Lookman then completed his brace by heading in a pinpoint cross from Moses Simon, sealing Nigeria’s third goal and a comprehensive victory.
Meanwhile, in their first qualifier, Rwanda played out a 1-1 draw against Libya at Tripoli International Stadium.
Libya took an early lead in the 16th minute with a goal from Subhi Al Dawi, but Rwanda responded two minutes into the second half when Nshuti Innocent scored the equalizer, with an assist from captain Djihad Bizimana.
Now, as Nigeria faces Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium, the Super Eagles are determined to continue their winning form and take a step closer to securing a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
