Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr has admitted that the Super Eagles possess superior talent, making it a tough challenge for his team to secure victory in their upcoming clash.
Rohr, who led Benin to a surprising 2-1 win over Nigeria in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier last June, is well aware of the difficulty in repeating that feat.
The Frenchman acknowledged the pressure on Nigeria to perform in front of their home crowd, especially after a string of underwhelming results.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Rohr emphasized that although his familiarity with the Super Eagles could offer some tactical advantage, it would not guarantee an easy match.
“As a coach, knowing the opposition is helpful, but it doesn’t make the task any simpler,” Rohr remarked. “Nigeria has better players, many of whom play for top clubs, unlike us. We don’t have the luxury of big-name players, but we’ve brought in younger talent, and I’m hopeful they can rise to the occasion.”
Rohr, 71, conceded that Nigeria are the clear favorites heading into the match but stressed that being the underdogs could work to Benin Republic’s advantage.
“We know we’re the outsiders, and that can sometimes play to your benefit. We’ll give our best and aim to be strong opponents for the Super Eagles,” he added.
The highly anticipated 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with kick-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
All eyes will be on the Super Eagles as they look to bounce back on home soil, while Rohr’s Benin side aims to cause another upset.
