The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a 1-0 defeat against Brazil in their opening match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Gabi Nunes’ goal in the 37th minute resulted in a disappointing loss for Nigeria in Bordeaux on Thursday.
Randy Waldrum’s squad started positively, with Chiwendu Ihezuo missing Nigeria’s best opportunity.
However, after that initial burst of energy, the Super Falcons found themselves on the back foot for most of the encounter.
Nigeria had three significant chances in quick succession. Rasheedat Ajibade, Nigeria’s standout player, outmaneuvered her marker and crossed for Ihezuo, whose header was saved by Brazil’s goalkeeper.
Randy Waldrum, the Falcons’ head coach, chose to keep Asisat Oshoala on the bench, instead placing Chinwendu Ihezuo at the forefront of the attack.
Without the former Barcelona Femeni striker, Nigeria’s offense struggled for most of the game.
The team’s brief moments of brilliance were driven by the determination of captain Rashidat Ajibade.
Her skill and speed created opportunities for Nigeria. One of her impressive runs led to a cross for Ihezuo, but the striker’s attempt was weak and directed straight at Lorena, Brazil’s goalkeeper.
Shortly after, Christy Ucheibe forced another sharp save from Lorena.
From that point on, Brazil dominated, with 38-year-old Marta showcasing her ingenuity.
The six-time Women’s World Footballer of the Year thought she had given Brazil the lead in the 36th minute, but her goal was ruled out for offside after a video assistant referee review.
However, there was no VAR intervention a few minutes later when Nunes capitalized on a lapse in Nigeria’s defense, smashing the ball into the net off the post beyond Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Falcons struggled to regain control, and despite a late push, Brazil held on to secure the crucial three points.
Next, the Falcons will face Spain on Sunday in their second Group C match, followed by a game against Japan on July 31.
