The Supreme Court has nullified the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had earlier recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
Delivering the ruling on Friday, April 4, 2025, the apex court, through a five-member panel, stated that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as the chairman of the party. The panel emphasised that leadership disputes within political parties are internal affairs and do not fall within the purview of the courts.
The court also noted that Julius Abure’s tenure as chairman had already expired.
The ruling came after the Supreme Court upheld an appeal filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another individual, describing it as meritorious. Conversely, a cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction was dismissed by the court, with the judges declaring it unmeritorious.
