The Take It Back Movement, organizers of the recently concluded #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests, have announced plans to stage another round of demonstrations in October 2024.
The nationwide protests, which took place from August 1 to 10, saw significant participation despite attempts by government officials to dissuade the youth from taking to the streets.
According to The PUNCH, the Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola confirmed the plans in a statement on Monday.
He revealed that the upcoming protest has been dubbed the “Fearless in October Protest” and that the movement’s core demands remain unchanged.
“Our charter of demands stands as the same,” Adenola said, adding, “If at all, we will add more as the country decays further.”
During the August protests, demonstrators presented a list of demands to the government, including the abolition of the Senate, the conversion of the House of Representatives into a part-time body, the implementation of a minimum wage of N250,000 for Nigerian workers, and a reversal of fuel prices and electricity tariffs to pre-January 2023 levels.
They also called for the release and compensation of all EndSARS and political detainees.
When asked about the possibility of adhering to court orders from state governments, which require protests to be held at designated locations, Adenola was firm in his response. “We won’t accept the compliance,” he stated.
In a related development, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju disclosed that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of those arrested during the previous protests.
