The Nigerian Armed Forces emerged as the overall champions of the 2nd African Military Games, amassing an impressive total of 234 medals as the event concluded on Saturday night in Abuja.
Team Nigeria claimed 114 gold, 65 silver, and 45 bronze medals across 21 sports, securing the top spot on the medal table.
Algeria finished in second place with 96 medals, including 53 gold, 22 silver, and 21 bronze, and is set to host the next edition of the games.
Kenya came third with 59 medals, comprising 21 gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze. Ghana, Ethiopia, and Tunisia completed the top six, while South Africa, Libya, Uganda, and Tanzania rounded out the top ten.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa, Major General Abdullahi Maikano, commended the athletes for their exceptional performances.
“These games have been more than a competition; they are a celebration of the shared values of unity, discipline, and sportsmanship across the African Armed Forces,” Maikano said.
He praised the participants for transcending borders and differences, uniting in a common purpose to represent their nations and uphold the ideals of cooperation and excellence.
“Each event showcased not just strength and skill, but also the hard work, discipline, and unwavering spirit of our athletes. The camaraderie and bonds formed here are a testament to what we can achieve when we stand together,” he added.
Maikano expressed gratitude to the Nigerian military authorities for hosting the event and encouraged participating countries to maintain the friendships and mutual understanding fostered during the games.
“Let these African Military Games inspire us to continue promoting peace, cooperation, and mutual respect among our nations,” he urged.
