The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Keisha, has unveiled plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge’s asphalt layers.
This announcement comes shortly after reports that the bridge will be temporarily closed for palliative works from Saturday, October 21, 2023, to Sunday, October 22, 2023.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Keisha confirmed that the extensive repair work is set to commence in late January 2024.
According to him, the closure is expected to last for six months, aimed at facilitating much-needed repairs to the critical bridge, which serves as a lifeline for commuters in Lagos.
Keisha explained, “We aim to perform a complete overhaul of the asphalt overlay, addressing long-overdue issues that have persisted for the past 30 years.”
He explained that this comprehensive repair project will involve the replacement of the existing asphalt layer on both sides of the bridge, ensuring its durability for the next decade.
She further clarified, “The Federal government has already awarded the contract, but preparatory work is pending as certain repair elements need to be imported. As a temporary measure, we will conduct palliative work to provide relief for motorists.”
Keisha elaborated on the timeline, stating, “The contractor will require approximately three months to import the necessary elements for the repair. During this period, one bound will be closed for repairs. After its completion, we will divert traffic to the other lane. Ultimately, our goal is to provide a brand new road for commuters.”
