Germany football legend, Thomas Muller, has suggested he may retire from Die Mannschaft following their heartbreaking defeat to Spain.
In a thrilling Euro 2024 quarterfinal match, Germany was eliminated by Spain.
Mikel Merino’s goal in the 119th minute secured the victory for La Roja, continuing Germany’s disappointing run in major tournaments.
After the match, German legend Thomas Muller hinted at retiring from international football.
In what was arguably one of the most exciting matches of Euro 2024, Spain triumphed over Germany in extra time with Merino’s late winner.
The Bayern Munich star later revealed that this might have been his last game for Germany.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Muller stated, “There is a high probability that this was my last international match.”
Coming into the tournament, it was anticipated that this could be Muller’s final European Championship.
With his participation in the 2026 World Cup being highly unlikely, he may have decided to end his international career. If he retires, he will do so as a World Cup winner, though without a European Championship.
On Instagram, Muller shared an emotional message but did not explicitly suggest it was his last match for Germany.
In the caption, he wrote, “I am proud to be a part of this team and above all proud to be a German. Thanks to everyone who cheered with us and were great hosts. Let’s take this feeling into our daily lives right now in current times.”
