At least three people suspected to be Islamic School students have been reported killed in a fire incident in Yola, Adamawa State.
The deceased, suspected to be either Almajirai, or Islamic school students, who lived on the grounds of their school in Sabon Pegi, a neighbourhood in Yola South Local Government Area.
According to reports on Monday the incident took place on the evening of July 7.
The school’s owner, Malam Abubakar Usman, stated that the students’ deaths were caused by the mosquito repellent catching fire and engulfing their room.
Two of the students, 12 year old Ismaila Muhammadu and 13 year old Yusuf Abubakar, died at the scene, and 17 year old Mustapha Ahmadu died early Saturday morning after being admitted to the hospital.
Giving his account of the deadly fire, Ismaila Mohammed said, “It was around 11 pm (on Friday) when we had already gone to bed, and one of the kids came crying.
“We rushed to see that one of the huts was on fire and we decided to put out the fire; that was when we saw two dead almajirai in the burnt hut.”
