Russian strikes across Ukraine on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least three people, injured several others, and caused damage to critical energy infrastructure, according to local authorities.
According to AFP, in Kyiv, residents were awakened early by explosions, which were likely the sounds of air defence systems in action.
Many people rushed to metro stations to seek shelter. An AFP photographer observed black smoke rising over the city, indicating damage from the attacks.
Authorities from at least six regions reported hearing explosions throughout the day. Sergiy Lysak, the governor of the central Dnipropetrovsk region, described the attack as “en masse,” confirming that a 69-year-old man was killed in the assault.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed that another civilian had died due to the strikes, though he did not provide further details.
Meanwhile, in the western city of Lutsk, a Russian attack caused significant damage to an apartment building and an infrastructure facility, resulting in one death, according to Mayor Igor Polishchuk.
Energy facilities were also a primary target of the strikes. Maksym Kozytskyi, governor of the Lviv region, reported that energy infrastructure in both the city of Lviv and the wider region was hit by drones and missiles, leading to partial power outages.
“There are partial power outages in Lviv and the surrounding region,” Kozytskyi stated on social media.
In the eastern region of Poltava, an attack on an industrial site left five people wounded, Governor Filip Pronin reported.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has faced numerous large-scale drone and missile attacks, particularly on energy facilities, which have caused significant damage and disruptions, impacting millions of Ukrainians.
