Tragedy struck in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State as the Parish Priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church Jootar, Reverend Father Faustinus Gundu, reportedly met a fatal end, allegedly struck by lightning and thunder.
According to Daily Trust, the local community has been left in shock, with differing versions of the incident circulating.
One account of the incident claims that Father Faustinus Gundu, affectionately known as ‘Albino,’ was struck by lightning and thunder during a rainstorm on Thursday.
In contrast, another version suggests that he may have collapsed and died.
Witnesses on the scene provided additional details, explaining that the priest had hurried outside his residence to retrieve a towel during the rain but slipped, hitting his head on a hard surface.
Tragically, the late Father Gundu was alone when this incident occurred, leaving him without immediate assistance.
He remained at the spot where he fell during the duration of the rainfall, and by the time others discovered him and attempted to provide aid, it was already too late.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Benue Command, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident to journalists in Makurdi.
However, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as it is uncertain whether he slumped and died or if the lightning strike was the cause.
This unfortunate incident has left the local community in mourning and highlights the unpredictability and danger associated with extreme weather conditions. The investigation into the exact cause of Father Faustinus Gundu’s demise is ongoing.
