President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday officially inaugurated the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
The Oni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, was appointed as the Chairman of the council, with the Obi of Obinugwu, Cletus Illomuanya, and King Jaja of Opobo, Dandeson Jaja, serving as co-chairmen. Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi 1, the Dein of Agbor, was named the secretary.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented President Tinubu at the event.
Akume conveyed the President’s strong support for the council, highlighting the significant role of traditional rulers as custodians of culture.
He praised their influence and importance, emphasizing that no progress could be made without their support.
He said, “President Bola Tinubu is very supportive of what is going on here today. The President has a tremendous respect for this wonderful institution. You are the custodians of our culture.
“You are refined. Every one of us respects you. Nobody can do it without the support of the traditional rulers. Nigeria is a great country, rich in diversity culturally and intellectually. With traditional rulers like you, Nigeria will move forward.”
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who hosted the event, encouraged the council members to collaborate with their Northern counterparts to foster national unity.
He urged support for President Tinubu’s administration, noting the President’s efforts to drive economic growth and development. Uzodimma cited recent initiatives to empower local governments and the ongoing economic reforms aimed at revitalizing the nation’s economy, despite temporary hardships.
Governor Uzodimma also highlighted improvements in the security situation, crediting the administration’s actions against banditry and criminality.
He expressed confidence that, with the support of traditional leaders, President Tinubu would achieve significant progress.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, commended the inauguration as a historic event that would strengthen cultural bonds and enhance the advisory role of traditional rulers in national development.
He lauded Governor Uzodimma for his efforts in initiating and coordinating the council’s formation.
In his remarks, the Oni of Ife, Ogunwusi, acknowledged Governor Uzodimma’s vision and dedication to uniting the Southern region, a goal he had pursued since his tenure as a Senator.
Ogunwusi praised the successful realization of this vision through the establishment of the council.
