President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the Nigerian military and the families of six soldiers who lost their lives during a terrorist assault on January 4, 2025, at the Nigerian Army base in Sabon Gida, Damboa, Borno State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President lauded the bravery and ultimate sacrifice of the fallen soldiers, describing their dedication as an inspiration to the nation.
“Their sacrifice in defending our nation will forever be honoured and remembered,” President Tinubu stated, emphasizing the country’s gratitude for their courage.
The President also praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their rapid and effective response to the attack, which included retaliatory airstrikes that inflicted significant damage on the attackers.
“This resolute action by the Army demonstrates the capability and readiness of our military to confront and defeat threats to our nation’s security,” he said.
The air raids, Tinubu noted, neutralized several terrorists and destroyed their equipment as they attempted to escape.
He commended the armed forces for their determination in safeguarding the country and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military in eradicating terrorism and banditry.
“Your sacrifices and dedication do not go unnoticed, and we stand firmly behind you in this ongoing fight to eliminate these threats,” the President assured.
Following the attack, Tinubu called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, stressing the need to learn from it and prevent future occurrences.
He further urged the military to intensify operations in other regions, particularly the Northwest, where banditry continues to threaten innocent lives and disrupt communities.
Appealing to citizens and the media, the President emphasized the importance of collective support for the armed forces. “We must remain united in our resolve to support our armed forces as they work tirelessly to protect our people and secure our nation,” he said.
The attack, which occurred during the early hours at the Sabon Gida army base, underscored the evolving threats facing the nation. While six soldiers tragically lost their lives, the military’s swift and decisive counterattack highlighted their resolve to maintain national security.
